All About CBN | Cannabinoids 101

As scientists and extractors get even better at isolating cannabinoids, consumers can expect to start hearing more about minor, lesser-known cannabinoids. Many cannabis and hemp enthusiasts are already familiar with THC and CBD, but with over a hundred known cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, we’ve only scratched the surface of understanding how each one affects the body.

Here at The Stoner Mom, we’re talking about these minor cannabinoids as they become more available on the market. In this post, it’s all about CBN, or cannabinol, a non-psychoactive cannabinoid used for healthy sleep, insomnia, and more. Read on to learn more about this fascinating cannabinoid and sister to THC!

What are Cannabinoids?

A quick refresher for the uninitiated. Cannabinoids are the chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant. These compounds work with the body’s endocannabinoid system to have certain effects. THC is by far the most well-known and abundant cannabinoid found in cannabis. In addition to having many therapeutic benefits, THC is also highly psychoactive, meaning it is the cannabinoid that makes us feel “stoned” or “high”. CBD (cannabidiol) is another very well-known cannabinoid and is a popular tool for managing anxiety, pain, and sleep. Unlike THC, CBD is non-psychoactive, so users can benefit from many therapeutic effects without feeling high.

What is CBN?

CBN, or cannabinol, is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid with similar analgesic and sedating effects as THC. In the past CBN was somewhat negatively viewed as a being the degraded or aged form of THC, but more recent studies have shown it to be a valuable and unique compound. Check out this great post from Steep Hill for more details about CBN and it’s potential.

CBN is present in small amounts in hemp and cannabis, as it only forms as THC is oxidized and begins to degrade into CBN. Because of this, the amount of CBN increases as the flower ages. Currently, hemp growers like Tweedle Farms are able to grow specific cultivars that are high in CBN. Tweedle Farms even carries a two to one ratio tincture with CBN and CBD, as I’ll review later further in this post.

Like mot cannabinoids, more studies need to be conducted to fully understand CBN’s effects with the human endocannabinoid system. CBN is considered non-psychoactive, or at most only mildly psychoactive. CBD taken with CBN can offset any potential psychoactive effects. CBN is federally legal and can be safely purchased online from trusted retailers like Tweedle Farms, who I have reviewed many times on this website.

Potential Benefits of CBN

CBN is known as the “sleepy cannabinoid”, though we aren’t quite yet sure why. It shares many therapeutic effects with its sisters THC and CBD, and is often used for pain, inflammation, and insomnia. Like THC, CBN reduces intraocular pressure and can be used for the treatment of glaucoma. CBN also fights free radicals in the bloodstream. Some use CBN and CBD for anxiety relief.

Tweedle Farms CBD : CBN Tincture

Our friends at Tweedle Farms, one of my favorite sources of online CBD-rich hemp, now carries a 2:1 CBD:CBN tincture in three concentrations:

300mg = 200mg CBD + 100mg CBN per 15ml bottle

600mg = 400mg CBD + 200mg CBN per 30ml bottle

900mg = 600mg CBD + 300mg CBN per 30ml bottle

These two-to-one formulas offer extremely high amounts CBN with CBD and also contain a good amount of CBC- another cannabinoid we’ll discuss in a future post. Because CBN is found in such trace amounts in most cannabis and hemp, tinctures like this one are a much more efficient way to try the cannabinoid.

In our formulation, we use only the highest-quality CBD and CBN distillates, along with organic MCT oil and steam-distilled botanical terpenes. This combination makes for a pleasant flavor and a high-level of bioavailability (especially when used sublingually!).

Of course, Tweedle Farms is transparent with its third-party lab testing, and you can view COA’s for all of their products in the images of each product page. You can check out more of my Tweedle Farms reviews here and here.

My Experience Using Tweedle Farms CBN Tincture

I have been using the 900mg 2:1 CBD:CBN tincture at bedtime, and it is amazing for sleep! I find it to be very relaxing and mildly sedating. It doesn’t knock me out, but it does relax my body and calms my mind, helping to ready me for sleep. Every time I take this tincture I sleep hard through the night, without waking up. And, best of all, I don’t experience any grogginess or fogginess the next morning.

If you’re already looking into CBD for sleep, I highly recommend trying this tincture with it’s unique CBD:CBN blend. This full-spectrum formula has all the cannabinoids that are known to help provide restorative sleep. Highly recommended!
