10 Amazing Facts About Hemp

Hemp, or industrial hemp, is a variety of the Cannabis Sativa plant species that is grown specifically for industrial use and contains less than .3% THC. Hemp is federally legal and used in thousands of products for many different purposes.

Hemp is linked to the earliest days of humanity. It is one of our first cultivated crops and is one of the oldest industries on the planet, going back more than 10,000 years to the beginnings of pottery. One of the oldest relics of human industry is a bit of hemp fabric dating back to approximately 8,000 BC.
Hemp featured prominently in the early days of this country. In fact, the US Constitution was drafted more than once on hemp paper. Thomas Jefferson was a huge hemp enthusiast, with a hemp farm where he tried to breed different strains. He is famously quoted as saying, “Hemp is of first necessity to the wealth and protection of the country.” George Washington also had massive hemp crops and he referred to cultivation practices over 90 times in his personal diaries.
Growing hemp was mandatory in several of the original American colonies. Virginia required colonists to grow hemp as early as 1619, and from 1763 to 1769, those not growing hemp in Virginia could face jail time.
Hemp is a superfood! Hemp seeds are one of the most nutritionally dense foods available. Hemp provides a great source of protein, Omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin E, Calcium, Iron, Zinc and more.
Hemp enriches the soil it’s grown in. Hemp can grow in several different environments and terrains, and it helps hold the soil together and increases its microbial content.
Hemp absorbs toxins and radioactive material from the environment. Scientists planted it at Chernobyl and found that hemp removed chemicals from the soil better than any other plant.
The word canvas comes from the Old French word “chanevaz“ (which sounds a lot like cannabis!), which literally means “made of hemp.”
Hemp can be used to make plastic. Henry Ford famously built a car out of hemp & soy plastic in 1941. Hemp composites are stronger, lighter, and cheaper than fiberglass and carbon fiber. Plus, they’re recyclable!
Hemp can be made into fuel. Ford built his car to run on hemp oil rather than gasoline. Hemp oil is a sustainable fuel source that is cost-effective and protects the environment. Hemp biodiesel boasts 30 million road miles in the United States and has been used as an alternative, renewable fuel source in Europe for over two decades.
Hemp flower is packed full of cannabinoids, even more than cannabis plants. It’s the source of pretty much every single CBD product you see, as well as all the other minor cannabinoids that are hot right now like Delta 8 THC, or CBG. All those isolated cannabinoids come from legal industrial hemp.

Hemp is truly a miraculous plant that has so many uses and benefits for not only our bodies but for our planet. If you love cannabis and you love defending this plant that has been unfairly maligned for decades, then it’s time to show some love and appreciation for hemp.
