Germinating Seeds the Easiest Way and Bios Grow Light Unboxing

Welcome back to another episode of What’s Going on in Dave’s Grow. This week I am going to show you the absolute easiest way to germinate your expensive seeds you purchased online. I will also be unboxing and setting up the new Endeavour grow light from the good people at Bios lighting. Let’s jump right in.

The Strains

Ok so in this video I went over the 3 types of seeds (feminized, regular, and auto-flower). As I mentioned, I am using feminized because I just prefer them and there are typically a lot of great strain choices when you are looking for feminized seeds.

For this grow I chose Raspberry Cough and Chiquita Banana. Both are hybrid strains that are sativa leaning. My medium of choice is coco coir and I will be using Success Nutrients for this grow in 3 gallon plastic pots inside a 4 x 4 tent.

I have been growing from seed for years now. I really love sitting down and looking through the seed catalogs on seed bank sites. It makes me giddy! Typically, you want to get at least 5 seeds when you purchase seeds online. This will give you a greater chance of successful germination in your grow.

seed cupsIn my tent, I am growing six plants (3 of each strain). I started with 4 seeds each and achieved 100% germination, Next step is to watch the seedlings to see which ones look the best and toss the remaining (I know, it really is a bummer throwing away a plant, but I only have so much room!).

My Method

People, get yourself some of these inexpensive plastic cups with humidity domes. They are reusable and work very very well. After you pop your seeds, you remove the humidity domes and start growing until the plant is ready to move up to the next size (1 quart).

Seed germinating

Be sure to saturate the growing medium and don’t let it dry out. Be sure not to overwater as well or you will start to see some algae growing on the top of your medium. It’s okay if this happens, but overwatering may also cause the seed to not grow.

Once you have your seeds in their containers, place them under a low-level light with a 24-hour “on” cycle. I was able to dim my BIOS light down to 30% using the Grow Flux controller. The seeds popped in 4 days so that was a success for sure.

BIOS Endeavour Grow Light

I have been waiting to get my hands on this light for a long time now. Did you know that BIOS is lead by a lead NASA lighting engineer? It’s true and their attention to detail on their grow light shows.

Right out of the box, I was very impressed with how lightweight the fixture was. The fact that it folds in half is excellent for me as I don’t have a ton of space in my grow room to store additional lights (not that I will be removing it from my tent anytime soon).

You can daisy chain multiple lights together, and it comes with a cable to wire up a dimmer if you like. I hooked mine up to the Grow Flux dimmer and it worked extremely well. The dimmer is 0-10v compatible and that is a great thing, especially if you don’t want to swap lights in and out to go from a less powerful light when they are seedlings to a powerhouse when you are in full veg and flower. Full specs are available here.

Protect Your Flower!

As always, don’t forget to protect your newly harvested flower with Boveda. Boveda’s 2-way humidity control packs will save your flower from drying out and losing it’s potency. Now I know what you all are saying “Boveda steals my terpenes!” Come on, do you really think that?

Boveda creates a monolayer around your terpenes which can mute the smell. This does not mean your terpenes have been stolen. It means they are protected by a layer of water. When you grind it up, the water layer is broken and you will smell the difference. I can’t say it enough. You work hard to grow your own so store it the right way with Boveda. You can learn more about Boveda here.

I will be showing you all the progress of this bar light from BIOS as the grow progresses. In the meantime, thank you for tuning in, and be sure to follow me on instagram @whatsgoingonindavesgrow.com to see the plant’s progress.
